Experience local life on a beautiful island

At Don Som Riverside Guesthouse, we strive to offer you more than just a stay; we offer an experience. Our guesthouse is the perfect base for adventurers and peace seekers who wish to experience the true essence of this beautiful country. We cannot offer you luxury (although we do our best), but hopefully, we can provide a positive experience that you will look back on with great pleasure.

CURRENT:
At this moment (this is written in July 2026), it is the low season in Laos, and therefore also with us. This means that it is very quiet, and if you don't mind enjoying beautiful views but also experiencing some rain occasionally, then the green (rainy) season is also a great time to be here. The options for activities are somewhat more limited, but if you are coming for peace and quiet, it is especially pleasant to stay here right now. And the prices for our rooms are also a bit lower than in the high season.

Your stay with us

We ensure the most comfortable and authentic stay possible (within our capabilities), with various options to make your trip unforgettable. Our slogan is 'More than just a guesthouse,' and we strive to live up to it.

Our Rooms

Our rooms are simple yet effective and offer you a beautiful view of the Mekong river (almost a kilometer wide in front of our 'door') and the lush gardens. Experience the simple luxury of the Laotian countryside. 

We currently have seven rooms and are constantly working to keep our rooms, bathrooms, restaurant/relaxing area, and gardens in order and to improve them.

Activities

We offer a variety of activities and are always happy to provide you with more information. We organize a cooking class (4000 Islands Cooking Class), a Fishing Trip, boat trips, and rent out two motorbikes. On Don Som, you can also take beautiful walks, swim in the Mekong River, enjoy the view, chat with other guests, read a book (we have a mini-library), or play a game (there are some games available in our restaurant/relaxing area). Upon request, we can also discuss other activities with you.

Social Projects

Don Som Riverside Guesthouse is a proud sponsor of the Don Som Project. We established these projects several years ago to provide the children in the village with a place where they can learn, play, and be themselves in a positive way. The projects are not financially connected to our guesthouse, but we naturally have a strong bond with what we do there and are always willing to tell you more about it. You can find more information about the projects under the heading 'Social Projects' on this site.

Food & Drinks

Cooking is one of our passions! We are very happy that we have received so many positive reactions to the food we prepared over the years. Where possible, we use ingredients from our own garden and eggs from our own chickens; it is all organic. For ingredients we do not have ourselves, we use the market in Khinak (where many products produced on Don Som are sold) or we buy them directly from our fellow villagers with vegetable gardens. Discover the beauty of Laos

Let yourself be inspired by the breathtaking landscapes and the serene atmosphere that Don Som and the 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don in the Laotian language) have to offer. A place where time sometimes seems to stand still and nature reigns supreme. An island where the traditional life of the ethnic Laotians is still very much present, and where you can catch a glimpse of what Laos is, what the Laotians do, and how they live.

Tanoi and Sander have created something truly unique with this guesthouse. A super hospitable guesthouse, basic but clean and well-maintained. A restaurant where you can enjoy delicious food. They're incredibly knowledgeable about Laos and the surrounding area, and they're happy to share it with you. The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful. A wonderful place to explore or simply relax.
They also work on projects to help the local community and the island's children. They have a wonderful activity center where the children can play after school and get something to eat.
They've stolen my heart, and I keep coming back as much as possible.

My stay here was awesome! I was planning to stay for two nights but ended up extending it to four. I absolutely loved the place — the owners are amazing and the food is great. They also have an activity center where kids from the village come to learn and play in a safe space. I highly recommend visiting the activity center and spending the afternoons playing with them :)

It's a wonderful place that Tanoi and Sander have created and continue to develop! A place where you can experience community as well as retreat and peace. The huts and the shared bathroom are simple, but perfectly adequate. The food is fantastic! Everything costs a bit more than elsewhere, but it serves a very good purpose: Sander and Tanoi have built a house and playground for the village children, where they can experience community, learn, and also receive food. Anyone who wants to can play with the children in the afternoons. It's truly wonderful how Sander and Tanoi dedicate themselves to the children! It's definitely important to pack earplugs, as there are roosters on the property and the boats are quite noisy. As a woman traveling alone, I felt very comfortable and enjoyed chatting with the other guests and with Sander and Tanoi, especially around the campfire. In those three days, I learned a lot about Laos. It was a wonderful time for me on Don Som!
